Paper size names in the United States

You know tabloid and ledger, and legal, and letter. Statements and flyers, could something be better? OK, enough of that.

tr;dr – We’re calling 4.25″ x 5.5″ sheets Handbill size.

Many sizes have names, or nicknames. I’m not familiar nor do I plan to become so with ones for ANSI or ARCH, and certainly not A or B (I think there is a B…) if they exist.

  • Tabloid : 17 x 11
  • Ledger : 11 x 17
  • Legal : 8.5 x 14
  • Letter : 8.5 x 11
  • Statement (aka half letter) : 5.5 x 8.5

There is one popular size that has been left out: 4.25 x 5.5, which is half statement size and/or quarter letter size. Being near exclusively used for flyers (quantity wise, but prescriptions are typically this size, as are many note pads) I believe they should take on the moniker of “handbill.” A handbill is a flyer and a flyer that is quarter letter size is about the size of an adult hand, so it only makes sense to me. Or perhaps it makes sense only to me… never-the-less, I’m doing this.

  • Handbill : 4.25 x 5.5
